It probably comes from the eastern Mediterranean. Nowadays, it can only be found in cultivation. In our country Roman cumin is grown very rarely, because the plant has a very low tolerance for cold. Like cumin, it is a spice and also a medicinal plant. It contains essential oil and flavonoids. It is characterized by anti-inflammatory, diaphoretic and diuretic effects. It increases the secretion of gastric juices, affects the respiratory center and stimulates heart action. It is a perfect addition to dishes from Arabic cuisine, chili con carne or spaghetti bolognese. Cumin gives these dishes an intense flavor and aroma.
There is also another spice, which also resembles caraway by name, and this is black caraway (Bunium persicum), which also comes from the celery family. It contains a significant amount of polyphenols, which are strong antioxidants. The seeds of black cumin are very similar to the common cumin. However, in the area of Bengal, “kalo jeera“, which is the Indian name for black cumin means cumin seed (Nigella sativa). Black cumin is a completely different plant in the buttercup family. Its seeds have a sharp, spicy taste and are also used as a spice.
